Greek Mount Athos Orthodox Incense
Greek incense from Mount Athos
These instances are produced in Greece, in some of the twenty Orthodox monasteries on Mount Athos. Mount Athos is a mountain and region located in the North of Greece, about 100 km from Salonika. It is almost an island, bathed by the Aegean Sea. This region enjoys a certain autonomy and persons of the female sex are prohibited from being present on its territory…
How are the Mount Athos Church incenses made ?
The Mount Athos Greek incenses are made by monks in a very artisan way, based on Eritrean olibanum which is ground, fragranced and coloured in certain cases. The paste is then dried and cut into pieces. The true Mount Athos church incenses are hard to the touch and generally not very powdery. Some imitations are produced in Greece, outside the monasteries. These incenses are generally soft, covered in a large quantity of white powder and usually round in shape.
Originally these orthodox incenses were only rose-scented (Mount Athos Rose incense), that today they can be scented with very varied fragrances.
