Asafoetida and Fenugreek powder, Chases away evil spirits
This substance is extracted from a plant native to Iran. Once cut, it releases its resin which is characterised by a very strong garlic smell. It is this smell that seems to give this resin the ability to ward off malevolent spirits. It is even said to have aphrodisiac effects. It should be noted that in German, this resin has the sweet name of Teufelsdreck which means "devil's shit".
In its pure form, it is a rather hard and compact resin, not very practical to use in fumigation. We offer here the most common form of Asafoetida, namely mixed with fenugreek flour (about 70%, sometimes also with rice flour).
Powdered Asafoetida is widely used in Indian cuisine in this form, where, under the name of Hing, it is often added to certain dishes for its beneficial effects on digestion.
