Sanaag Frankincense from Somalia
This is a frankincense resin that is less well known than Boswellia carterii, which is most commonly found in Somalia. It has been harvested since time immemorial, but is usually added to harvests of frankincense carterii. This is a batch of pure Boswellia occulta that has not been mixed with other varieties.
Its odour is very different and can be described as bitter, which is due to the methyl ethers that only this resin contains in abundance.
A resin native to the region called Sanaag in northern Somalia along the Gulf of Aden. Sanaag (or Sanag) is part of Somaliland, a region that claims its independence, although this has not yet been recognised by the international community.
