Gugul (Guggul), Commiphora Mukul or Indian Bdellium
Guggul, or Indian bdellium, is the resin of small thorny trees of the Burseraceae family (like myrrh or frankincense), found in the arid regions of northwestern India (mainly in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat) or in parts of Pakistan. Gugul, also spelled guggul or guggulu, is sometimes also called Indian frankincense. It is a resin widely used in traditional Indian medicine (Ayurvedic medicine). Unfortunately, this is the reason why it is overused, less and less easy to find and therefore more and more expensive...
Behaviour of Guggul in fumigation
Guggul resin burns easily over hot coals. It burns rather slowly, similar to the myrrh commiphora abyssinica, to which it is closely related. The fragrance is quite strong, a scorching smell with balsamic and even vanilla notes.
