Siam Benzoin Powder from Laos – Styrax tonkinensis
This natural benzoin resin comes from Laos and is obtained from the tree Styrax tonkinensis. The form offered consists of a mixture of powder and small resin fragments and is particularly well suited to traditional incense burning.
Siam benzoin forms as an aromatic exudate of the styrax tree. After the bark is cut, the resin seeps out and gradually hardens. Styrax tonkinensis is native to Southeast Asia; Siam benzoin is harvested particularly in Laos and Vietnam.
Fragrance Profile of Siam Benzoin
When burned, Siam benzoin develops a warm, soft and distinctly sweet fragrance. Vanilla-like and caramel-like notes blend with a honey-like warmth and subtle balsamic nuances. Compared with Sumatra benzoin, its fragrance is often perceived as milder, more refined and less intense.
Traditional Use as an Incense Resin
Benzoin has long been one of the well-known aromatic incense resins and is found in various incense traditions. It is used both on its own and as an ingredient in incense blends. Its warm, sweet character makes it particularly well suited for combining with other resins, woods and aromatic plant materials.
For incense burning, a small amount can be placed on glowing incense charcoal or slowly warmed on a suitable incense burner. Benzoin softens when heated and can melt, so using it sparingly is recommended.
