Japanese and international versions: what are the differences?

Several incense varieties in the Shoyeido Daily Incense range are available in two versions: one intended for the Japanese market and another for international markets, distributed in part by Shoyeido USA.

These versions are based on the same traditional incense compositions and generally share the same principal ingredients. However, differences in fragrance perception and formulation may exist. The manufacturer does not disclose the complete recipes or the exact proportions of the aromatic materials.

One particularly noticeable difference is often the colour of the incense sticks. While international versions are generally brown, Japanese versions come in various shades depending on the fragrance, including dark green, reddish brown and very dark violet. Colour alone, however, does not establish the presence of any particular ingredient.

To help you select the appropriate product, we clearly identify the different varieties as Japanese version or international version. Additional product photographs often show the distinctive colour of the Japanese incense sticks.

Hoyei-Koh – Eternal Treasure is a special case: its Japanese version is sold under the name Hooyei-Koh. These two spellings refer to the same traditional incense fragrance in two different versions.
