Abalone Smudging Shell from Mexico – 15–18 cm

This natural abalone shell from Mexico is used as a smudging vessel for sage, plant bundles and aromatic woods. Measuring approximately 15 to 18 cm, it provides enough space to safely hold smouldering incense material and catch residue during use.

Abalone shells are distinguished by their iridescent mother-of-pearl interior. As this is a natural product, individual shells vary in shape, size, colour and markings. Each shell therefore has its own unique appearance.

Traditional use in smudging practices

Abalone shells are particularly well known as smudging vessels in connection with North American smudging traditions. They are used, for example, to hold smouldering bundles of white sage and other aromatic plants or to catch the ash produced during smudging.

The size of this shell also makes it suitable for other plant bundles as well as pieces of Palo Santo wood. The smouldering material can be placed in the shell during or after use.

Not suitable for incense charcoal

Abalone shells are not suitable for use with charcoal tablets. The natural shell is sensitive to the intense, concentrated heat of glowing charcoal and may be damaged as a result. For natural resins burned over charcoal, a suitable heat-resistant incense burner should be used instead.
