Shoyeido Xiang-Do – Japanese Incense Sticks (8)

Shoyeido Xiang-Do Japanese incense sticks combine Japanese incense craftsmanship with a distinctive manufacturing technique. For this range, the historic Kyoto incense maker uses a specially developed compression process that shapes finely blended aromatic materials into short, compact incense sticks. These compositions differ from conventional Japanese incense in both their shape and method of production.

The Xiang-Do collection offers a remarkable variety of fragrances, ranging from traditional woody and resinous notes to floral and fruity compositions, as well as contemporary interpretations inspired by tea and coffee. The incense sticks are made without a bamboo core.

Xiang-Do – Japanese incense sticks made by compression

Unlike traditional Japanese incense sticks, which are generally produced by extruding incense paste through a die to form long strands, Xiang-Do sticks are made using a special compression technique. The incense mixture is shaped directly into its compact stick form.

This manufacturing process developed by Shoyeido is one of the defining characteristics of the Xiang-Do range. The short sticks provide a relatively brief fragrance experience and are particularly suitable for anyone wishing to explore different scents or enjoy a dedicated incense moment in everyday life.

From sandalwood and frankincense to green tea and vanilla

The Xiang-Do range brings together classic and contemporary fragrance themes, including:

  • Sandalwood and agarwood: compositions with warm woody notes, sometimes deep and resinous in character.
  • Frankincense and Palo Santo: incense sticks with aromatic profiles inspired by well-known fragrant resins and woods.
  • Sencha green tea and other tea fragrances: fresh, vegetal and delicately balanced compositions evoking Japanese tea culture.
  • Vanilla, flowers and fruits: softer, sweeter, floral or fruity fragrance interpretations.

Fragrance names describe the intended aromatic character. They do not necessarily mean that the corresponding plant or natural material is an ingredient in the incense formulation.

Xiang-Do incense assortments for exploring different fragrances

Alongside individual fragrances, Shoyeido also offers Xiang-Do assortments containing several different aromatic compositions. These selections allow you to discover a variety of scents within a single pack.

The Fresh Assortment, for example, combines three fragrances: Sencha green tea, coffee and black tea. Other assortments offer a selection of different fragrance styles, from woody and resinous notes to floral and fresh compositions. The exact contents and number of sticks are specified on each product page.

Size and use of Shoyeido Xiang-Do incense sticks

Xiang-Do incense sticks are generally around 7 cm long. Depending on the fragrance and presentation, their burning time is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The number of sticks and included accessories may vary between packs.

Place an incense stick in a suitable heat-resistant holder, light the tip and gently blow out the flame after a few seconds. Set the holder on a non-combustible surface and allow the incense stick to burn completely.
