Aden Frankincense 1st Grade is a carefully selected natural incense resin from Somalia. The pale, partly translucent resin tears range in colour from creamy white and yellow to amber. Botanically, this frankincense is traditionally referred to as Boswellia carterii.
The name “Aden Frankincense” can initially be misleading with regard to its origin: this resin does not come from the Yemeni port city of Aden, but from Somalia. For a long time, Aden was an important trading hub for frankincense from the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa. The historic trade name has been retained and is still used today for this quality of frankincense.
When burned, Aden frankincense develops a fresh, balsamic and resinous fragrance with light citrus nuances. Earthy and woody notes emerge in the background. Its classic frankincense character is clearly recognisable and is less bitter than that of some other Somali frankincense varieties.
Frankincense is one of the oldest known aromatic substances used for incense and has accompanied religious and cultural traditions for thousands of years. In Christian tradition, frankincense is one of the gifts of the Three Wise Men. In various religious incense practices, frankincense has also long been associated with prayer, meditation and spiritual ceremonies.
Traditionally, frankincense is also burned to cleanse rooms and create a special, calm atmosphere. Such meanings are based on cultural and religious traditions and should not be understood as medical effects.
A few small resin tears or pieces can be placed traditionally on glowing incense charcoal. A gentler release of fragrance is possible with a suitable incense burner, where the resin is slowly warmed above a candle on a mesh screen or incense plate. It is best to begin with a small amount and add more resin as needed.
