Sumatra Benzoin 1st Grade is a particularly carefully selected quality of Indonesian benzoin resin. This variety consists of clean, clearly identifiable resin pieces of different sizes and is supplied with virtually no loose resin powder. This distinguishes it from more common qualities, which may contain not only pieces but also more heavily fragmented resin or resin powder that has formed into agglomerates.
The resin comes from Styrax benzoin, a tree native to Southeast Asia belonging to the Styracaceae family. Sumatra benzoin is traditionally harvested in Indonesia and is one of the classic aromatic natural resins.
Fragrance of Sumatra benzoin
When burned, the resin develops a warm, balsamic and intensely aromatic fragrance with sweet and spicy nuances. Sumatra benzoin is particularly characterised by its cinnamon-like notes. The fragrance is strong and is suitable both for burning on its own and for blends with other resins.
Traditional use
Benzoin has a long history as an incense material. In various incense traditions, the resin is used particularly for cleansing rooms and the atmosphere. It is also traditionally attributed protective properties and is used in incense rituals intended to create a pleasant and harmonious atmosphere. These meanings are based on traditional incense practices and should not be understood as medical effects.
Sumatra benzoin can be burned on its own or combined with other incense materials. It blends particularly well, for example, with frankincense: the balsamic, sweet and spicy notes of benzoin complement the characteristic fragrance of frankincense.
How to burn benzoin
For traditional incense burning, a few small pieces of resin are placed on glowing incense charcoal. Benzoin has an intense fragrance, so only a small amount is needed. The quantity can be gradually adjusted according to the desired fragrance intensity.
