Shasta Sage, also known as Blue Sage or Desert Sage, is an aromatic plant used for incense from the Mount Shasta region of Northern California. The silvery-grey plant material is dried and tied into a compact smudge bundle approximately 10 to 12 cm long.
The name “Blue Sage” is not botanically precise and is used commercially for various plants. Shasta Sage from Northern California belongs to the genus Artemisia; however, without a definitive botanical identification, the exact species used in this smudge bundle cannot be reliably specified.
When burned as incense, Shasta Sage releases an aromatic, herbaceous and slightly sweet fragrance. Compared with White Sage (Salvia apiana), its aroma is often perceived as milder and less intense, with dry, warm and subtly spicy herbal notes.
Shasta Sage is used particularly for cleansing spaces with smoke, as well as in connection with meditation and spiritual rituals. In contemporary incense traditions, its smoke is primarily associated with cleansing and protection. Shasta Sage is often chosen when a gentler character than White Sage is desired.
In spiritual traditions surrounding Shasta Sage, the plant is also associated with calm, balance and preparation for meditation or ceremonies. These associations belong to traditional and modern spiritual incense practices and should not be understood as scientifically proven effects.
Light the tip of the bundle and allow it to burn briefly. Then carefully blow out the flame so that the plant material continues to smoulder slowly and release smoke. The bundle can be held over a heat-resistant incense bowl or placed inside it.
After use, carefully extinguish the embers completely. Ensure adequate ventilation and never leave the smouldering bundle unattended.
As this is a natural product, the shape, colour, size and weight of the bundle may vary slightly.
