Brown Dammar 50 g – Dark Incense Resin

Brown Dammar, also known as dark dammar, is a natural incense resin with a distinctly darker appearance than the familiar pale dammar varieties. The irregular pieces display areas of brown, grey and almost black, sometimes with lighter sections ranging from yellowish to amber in appearance.

The name dammar does not refer to a single botanical type of resin. Various resins from Asian trees are traded under this name. As the botanical origin of the dark dammar offered here is not reliably documented, we deliberately refrain from attributing it to a particular tree species.

What is brown dammar?

The terms brown dammar and dark dammar are used commercially for darker varieties of dammar. However, their botanical origin cannot be determined from the trade name alone.

Various resins referred to as dammar come from trees belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family, including species of the genera Shorea and Hopea. The resin of the sal tree Shorea robusta is also known as sal dammar. At the same time, the name “Black Dammar” can be used for the resin of Canarium strictum from the Burseraceae family.

These names are not always used consistently in the trade. The colour, shape and structure of a piece of resin are likewise insufficient to identify the tree species that produced it with certainty. This brown dammar is therefore offered as what is reliably known: a dark natural incense resin sold under the trade name brown dammar.

An Asian group of resins with a long history of use

Resins traded under the name dammar have a long history of use in Asia. Alongside their use as incense materials, various dammar resins have been important raw materials for lacquers, varnishes and other traditional coatings.

Without a reliable identification of the tree species, it is not possible to determine which of these historical uses are directly associated with the botanical origin of the resin offered here. It would likewise be inappropriate to attribute the religious or cultural traditions of a particular type of dammar to this product.

Fragrance profile – warm, resinous and balsamic

When burned, dark dammar develops a predominantly warm, resinous and balsamic fragrance character. Depending on the individual resin piece and the temperature, earthy nuances may also emerge. Some dark dammar varieties are additionally perceived as mild and slightly honeyed.

This fragrance description is intended as a guide, as natural resins can vary according to origin, quality and individual pieces. The fresh, distinctly citrusy fragrance often associated with pale dammar should not automatically be attributed to dark dammar.

Burning brown dammar as incense

For a strong incense experience, a small amount of resin can be placed on incense charcoal that is fully glowing. As resins can quickly melt and produce intense smoke when exposed to direct heat, it is advisable to begin with a small amount.

For a slower release of fragrance, dark dammar can also be gently warmed on a suitable incense burner or incense mesh. At a moderate temperature, its warm, balsamic and earthy facets can usually be appreciated in greater detail.

Dark dammar can be burned on its own or combined with other natural resins, woods and aromatic plants. Its warm character makes it particularly suitable as a contrast to fresher and lighter incense materials.

In various contemporary incense practices, brown dammar is associated with symbolic purification, inner clarity and a warm, comforting atmosphere. Some incense practitioners use it as an accompaniment to meditation and quiet moments of reflection.
