Product description

Chung Shim by ChuiWoon HyangDang is a traditionally inspired Korean incense with an unusual combination of pine, elecampane, red sandalwood and spices. According to the manufacturer's ingredient list, the composition contains pine (Pinus densiflora), elecampane (Enula campana), red sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) and other spices.

Like the other incense sticks in this series, Chung Shim is made without synthetic oils, synthetic binders or artificial fragrances.

Fragrance profile

Chung Shim develops a warm, woody-spicy fragrance with a lightly herbal character. The pine contributes an aromatic, dry woody note, while elecampane and the spices add spicy and earthy nuances to the composition. Red sandalwood complements this base with another warm woody facet. The result is a distinctive fragrance that differs both from the pine- and cinnamon-focused Da Bo and from the more strongly herbal-spicy composition of Chui Woon.

Korean incense with a botanical composition

Chung Shim reveals another facet of the Korean incense tradition. The combination of different woods, plants and spices clearly distinguishes these incense sticks from many Japanese compositions, in which sandalwood or agarwood often take centre stage.

Incense has a long cultural history in Korea. One important testimony to this tradition is the gilt-bronze incense burner from the 6th-century Baekje Kingdom, which is among the most impressive surviving examples of historical Korean incense culture.

Format and burning time

One pack contains 60 g of incense. The incense sticks are approximately 14 cm long and have a burning time of around 40 minutes.

Chung Shim is made by ChuiWoon HyangDang in South Korea.
