Product description

Da Bo by ChuiWoon HyangDang is a Korean incense with a spicy-woody composition of pine (Pinus koraiensis), turmeric (Curcuma longa), cinnamon and other spices. This long version has the same fragrance character as the shorter Da Bo variant, but its 24 cm incense sticks provide a considerably longer burning time.

The name Da Bo – also written Dabo – can be translated approximately as “Many Treasures”. The combination of different plants and spices fits this name well and gives the incense its distinctive Korean character.

Fragrance profile

Da Bo develops a warm, spicy and woody fragrance. Pine forms a characteristic aromatic base, while turmeric, cinnamon and the other spices contribute earthy, warm and dry nuances. The result differs noticeably from many Japanese incense compositions, in which sandalwood or agarwood tend to play a more prominent role.

Korean incense with a tradition of its own

Korean incense sticks are considerably less well known outside Korea than Japanese incense. Although the two traditions use some similar aromatic materials, the resulting fragrance profiles can differ significantly. Korean compositions make use, among other ingredients, of pine, spices and plants that play a particular role in Korean fragrance and herbal traditions.

The use of incense has a long history in Korea. One impressive testimony to this tradition is the famous gilt-bronze incense burner from the 6th-century Baekje Kingdom, which is among the most significant surviving examples of historical Korean incense culture.

Long version for extended incense burning

This Da Bo version contains approximately 60 g of incense sticks. The individual sticks are approximately 24 cm long and burn for around 60 minutes. This variant therefore offers the same fragrance as the shorter 14 cm version, but with a considerably longer burning time.

Da Bo is made by ChuiWoon HyangDang in South Korea.
