Dakkara Frankincense from Kenya 50 g – Boswellia neglecta

Dakkara Frankincense from Kenya is an unusual dark frankincense quality from Boswellia neglecta. The resin comes from northern Kenya and is visually very different from the pale, translucent frankincense tears of many other Boswellia species: Dakkara forms dark, irregular and sometimes large pieces with a rough, almost stone-like surface.

Its consistency is equally distinctive. The resin pieces are dry and firm on the outside, but may still be sticky inside. This unusual appearance has also earned Dakkara the name “black frankincense”.

Boswellia neglecta from East Africa

Boswellia neglecta is an East African Boswellia species found in dry, rocky landscapes. Its natural range includes northern Kenya. Compared with the better-known pale olibanum varieties, Dakkara is less common in the European incense trade and offers a distinctly different character both visually and aromatically.

Spicy, fresh fragrance with camphor notes

When burned, Dakkara develops a spicy, fresh and balsamic-resinous fragrance. Its camphor-like notes are particularly characteristic, accompanied by dry, woody-resinous nuances and a subtle fresh facet. This gives it a fragrance profile that differs markedly from the softer and often more strongly citrus-oriented character of classic pale frankincense varieties.

How to burn Dakkara frankincense

As some of the pieces are quite large, only a small amount is needed for incense burning. A small piece of resin can be placed on glowing incense charcoal. Alternatively, Dakkara can be slowly warmed on a suitable incense burner above a candle, using a mesh screen or incense plate. This gentler method allows the fragrance to develop gradually.
