Product description

This small Gin-yo mica plate is a traditional accessory for the Japanese incense ceremony Kōdō, the “Way of Fragrance”. The square mica plate is framed with a fine steel rim and is made in Japan.

In Kōdō, the mica plate is used as an intermediary layer above the heat source. Fragrant incense wood is placed on the plate and gently heated by the warmth below rather than being burned directly. This indirect heating makes it possible to appreciate the fragrance of the incense wood in a particularly controlled way.

Gin-yo and the Japanese incense ceremony

Alongside the tea ceremony and Ikebana, Kōdō is one of Japan’s classical, highly ritualised arts. Various specialised incense utensils are used in the traditional preparation. These include white incense ash, charcoal and the mica plate known as Gin-yo, on which small pieces of fragrant wood are heated.
