Japanese Ceramic Kokeshi Doll – Red with Black Hair

Kokeshi – a Japanese doll tradition

Kokeshi originated in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan and have been made there for more than 200 years. Traditional Dentō-Kokeshi developed as turned wooden dolls with a simple cylindrical body and a round head. They were originally made, among other purposes, as souvenirs for visitors to Japanese hot springs (Onsen).

During the 20th century, modern Kokeshi with freer designs also developed. These are often referred to as Shingata-Kokeshi and differ from the regionally inherited traditional Kokeshi through their greater variety of shapes, colours and decorative designs. Other materials and freer interpretations of the classic form can also be found among modern decorative Kokeshi.

Symbolism and use

Today, Kokeshi are appreciated both in Japan and abroad as decorative objects and expressions of Japanese culture. Traditionally, they are also associated with wishes for good fortune, well-being and the healthy growth of children. Modern Kokeshi are particularly suitable as decoration, as collector's items or as small gifts with Japanese character.
