Product description

Kunjudo Hachijuhachi-ya are Japanese incense sticks with an aromatic fragrance reminiscent of freshly brewed green tea. These slender incense sticks are made by the Japanese manufacturer Kunjudo and are characterised by their low smoke production. The pack contains approximately 40 g of incense sticks, each with a burning time of around 20 minutes.

Hachijuhachi-ya – The Fragrance of Freshly Brewed Green Tea

The fragrance composition of Hachijuhachi-ya evokes the distinctive aroma of Japanese green tea. Its character is predominantly fresh, green and pleasantly aromatic, recalling the delicate fragrant nuances of freshly brewed tea leaves.

Unlike distinctly floral incense sticks, Hachijuhachi-ya has a more restrained, green fragrance profile. The composition is inspired by the aroma of green tea, although this does not necessarily mean that actual tea leaves or green tea extracts are used in its manufacture.

A Name Rooted in Japanese Tea Culture

Hachijuhachi-ya (八十八夜) literally means “88th night” and refers to the 88th day after the beginning of spring in the traditional Japanese calendar, usually falling in early May.

This date is closely associated with Japanese tea culture. In many tea-growing regions, it coincides with the first spring harvest. The young tea harvested during this season, known as Shincha, is particularly prized for its fresh aroma.

The product name therefore draws on a traditional seasonal concept closely associated with fresh tea leaves and the beginning of the new tea harvest. The original green packaging, decorated with a tea-leaf motif, reinforces this connection.

Low-Smoke Incense Sticks with Flavonoids

Hachijuhachi-ya Slim incense sticks are designed to produce relatively little smoke. They allow the aromatic green tea fragrance to be enjoyed with comparatively little visible smoke. However, they are not completely smokeless.

A distinctive feature is the inclusion of flavonoids. Kunjudo describes these plant-derived compounds as natural deodorising ingredients intended to help reduce unwanted odours. This manufacturer's claim should not be interpreted as meaning that the incense purifies indoor air.

Japanese Incense Craftsmanship by Kunjudo

The manufacturer Kunjudo is based on the Japanese island of Awaji, a long-established centre of incense-stick production. Alongside traditional incense fragrances, the company also develops contemporary compositions inspired by flowers, plants and familiar scents from everyday Japanese life.

Hachijuhachi-ya is one of these contemporary fragrance creations. Unlike the floral varieties in the Hana Kaori series, its fragrance focuses not on an individual flower but on the aroma of Japanese green tea.

Each pack contains approximately 100 slender incense sticks with a total weight of around 40 g. The sticks measure approximately 13.5 cm in length and burn for around 20 minutes.
