Lavandin flowers (Lavandula × intermedia) from France have an intense, aromatic fragrance and are suitable for incense burning, potpourri and scented sachets. Lavandin is a natural hybrid of true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) and combines characteristics of both parent species.
The dried flowers can be used in many different ways: as a fragrant addition to herbs and resins in incense blends or, without burning, to perfume rooms, wardrobes and textiles.
Lavandin differs from true lavender not only botanically but also in its fragrance. While true lavender is known for a rather delicate, soft and floral aroma, lavandin has a stronger and fresher character with more pronounced camphoraceous nuances. Lavandin is therefore an aromatic plant in its own right and not simply another name for lavender.
As a natural hybrid, lavandin is largely sterile and is therefore propagated vegetatively for cultivation. Its cultivation expanded significantly in France, particularly during the 20th century. Today, lavandin, with its extensive violet fields, is a defining feature of many well-known landscapes of Provence.
Lavandin has an intense, floral and herbaceous fragrance with fresh, slightly woody and characteristically camphoraceous nuances. When burned as incense, the aroma becomes warmer and drier, while retaining its strong aromatic character.
For incense burning, place a small amount of the dried lavandin flowers on a fully glowing incense charcoal disc. They can be used on their own or combined with other plants, woods and incense resins to create individual blends.
Without burning, the flowers are suitable for potpourri and scented sachets, for example to naturally fragrance wardrobes and textiles. Their intense fragrance makes lavandin particularly well suited to these traditional uses.
