Natural myrrh from Somalia
Myrrh is one of the oldest known incense resins in the world. It is obtained from the resin of the myrrh tree, Commiphora myrrha, which grows in the arid regions of the Horn of Africa. After the bark is carefully scored, the resin slowly seeps out and hardens in the open air into the characteristic "myrrh tears" that have been collected and valued as a precious incense material for thousands of years.
Myrrh already played an important role in religious ceremonies and embalming practices in Ancient Egypt. It is also mentioned in the Bible, where it was presented alongside gold and frankincense as one of the gifts of the Three Wise Men. To this day, myrrh holds a special place in many incense traditions and remains one of the classic natural resins used for spiritual and religious incense rituals.
In various incense traditions, myrrh is burned to create a calm and dignified atmosphere. It has traditionally been associated with symbolic purification and protection, making it a popular choice for meditation, prayer, and moments of quiet reflection. These uses are based on historical traditions and cultural practices.
With its deep, warm fragrance, myrrh blends particularly well with frankincense. These two resins have been burned together for centuries and complement each other through their distinctive aromatic profiles. Myrrh also combines beautifully with benzoin resin or dammar to create balanced and traditional incense blends.
