Myrtle leaves (Myrtus communis) from Albania, dried and cut for incense burning. The evergreen myrtle is a characteristic plant of the Mediterranean region and grows wild in the maquis, the dense and aromatic vegetation that shapes many Mediterranean landscapes.
The leathery, fragrant leaves contain natural aromatic compounds and develop an unmistakably fresh herbal character when burned as incense. The cut form is easy to measure and is suitable both for use on its own and for creating your own incense blends.
Myrtle has held a special cultural and symbolic significance since ancient times. In Greek mythology, it was sacred to Aphrodite, and in Roman tradition to Venus. It was associated with love and fertility, and myrtle branches were also used in wedding customs for a long time.
Another important tradition is found in Judaism: myrtle branches are among the Four Species used during the Jewish festival of Sukkot. These different traditions illustrate how deeply myrtle is rooted in the cultural history of the Mediterranean region and its neighbouring areas.
Myrtle leaves have a fresh, green and aromatic fragrance with slightly mentholated, spicy and subtly citrusy nuances. When burned as incense, they release a lively, herbaceous aroma reminiscent of the fragrant vegetation of the Mediterranean maquis. Compared with rosemary, myrtle is less culinary and spicy in character, while compared with eucalyptus it is somewhat softer and more herbal.
Place a small amount of the cut myrtle leaves on a fully glowing incense charcoal disc. As dried leaves smoulder relatively quickly, it is best to start with a small amount and add more as needed.
Myrtle can be burned on its own or combined with other Mediterranean herbs, aromatic woods and incense resins. Always use a heat-resistant incense vessel, ensure adequate ventilation and never leave glowing incense charcoal unattended.
