Product description

Shoyeido Haku-Un – White Cloud belongs to the traditional Daily Incense collection by Shoyeido, the Japanese incense manufacturer based in Kyoto, also known as Nature & Tradition. This classic fragrance composition combines benzoin resin, sandalwood, cloves, borneol camphor and other spices to create a warm, woody and aromatic, spicy incense fragrance. Offered here is one individual pack containing 35 long incense sticks in the international version.

A complex fragrance with sandalwood, benzoin and camphor

The fragrance of Haku-Un is characterised by the interplay of warm woody notes, balsamic sweetness and fresh aromatic accents. Sandalwood provides a soft, woody base, while benzoin resin adds a resinous, slightly sweet and balsamic dimension to the composition.

Cloves complement the blend with their distinctive warm spiciness. The borneol camphor also present contributes a fresh, aromatic and slightly camphor-like facet, creating an interesting contrast with the softer woody and resinous notes.

Additional spices round off the composition. The result is a warm, woody and balsamic incense fragrance with spicy and fresh aromatic nuances. The precise intensity of the individual ingredients depends on their undisclosed blending proportions.

Haku-Un – White Cloud

The Japanese name Hakuun (白雲) means "white cloud". In Shoyeido's international range, this incense is sold under the name Haku-Un – White Cloud.

The white cloud is a familiar motif in Japanese landscape imagery and also appears in traditional painting and poetry. It evokes the changing forms of nature, mountain landscapes and the open sky.

The name White Cloud gives this classic incense composition a poetic identity. However, the fragrance itself is not defined by its name, but by the interplay of its aromatic woods, resins and spices.

Traditional incense craftsmanship from Kyoto

The history of Shoyeido dates back to 1705. The Kyoto-based company is one of Japan's long-established incense manufacturers and is known for its carefully balanced compositions of aromatic woods, resins and spices.

The Daily Incense collection includes a variety of classic incense blends intended for regular use. Within this range, Haku-Un has a distinctive character: its warm foundation of sandalwood and benzoin is complemented by cloves and the fresh aromatic note of borneol camphor.

International version of Haku-Un – White Cloud

The international version of Haku-Un offered here contains 35 long, brown incense sticks without a bamboo core. The sticks measure approximately 22 cm in length and have an average burning time of around 50 minutes.

On the international packaging, the product name is written with a hyphen as Haku-Un. The Japanese versions, by contrast, use the name Hakuun without a hyphen.

The Japanese incense sticks also differ visually from this international version: they have a grey colour, whereas the sticks offered here are brown. However, these differences in spelling and colour do not provide a reliable basis for drawing conclusions about possible variations in the formula.

Other versions of Hakuun

Shoyeido Hakuun – White Cloud is also available in Japanese versions. These include an individual roll containing 35 long incense sticks and a large original box containing 490 shorter incense sticks.

The documented ingredient list for the international version includes benzoin resin, sandalwood, cloves, borneol camphor and other spices. As Shoyeido does not disclose the complete formulas or blending proportions of the different versions, any possible differences in composition cannot be reliably determined.
