Shoyeido Nokiba Moss Garden – Japanese Incense Sticks

Shoyeido Nokiba – Moss Garden is a traditional Japanese incense from Kyoto and belongs to Shoyeido's classic Daily Incense collection, also known as Nature & Tradition. The composition combines sandalwood, patchouli, benzoin resin and other spices to create a warm, woody and pleasantly balsamic fragrance. This international version contains 35 long, brown incense sticks without a bamboo core.

Sandalwood, patchouli and the balsamic warmth of benzoin

The fragrance of Nokiba is characterised by a harmonious interplay of soft woody notes, earthy accents and gentle balsamic sweetness. Sandalwood provides the warm, woody foundation of the composition, while patchouli contributes an aromatic, slightly herbal and earthy depth.

Benzoin resin complements the blend with its distinctive resinous, balsamic and slightly sweet nuances. Additional spices round off the fragrance without allowing any single ingredient to dominate the overall composition.

Mosses play an important role in Japanese garden design. They cover stones, tree trunks and shaded areas of ground, giving many historic gardens their characteristic soft, green appearance. Moss gardens are a particularly well-known feature of traditional garden design in Kyoto.

With Moss Garden, Shoyeido draws on this natural and cultural inspiration. However, the name does not describe a botanical ingredient: moss is not among the documented components of the fragrance composition.

A classic composition by Shoyeido

The history of Shoyeido dates back to 1705. The Kyoto-based company is one of Japan's long-established incense manufacturers and is known for its compositions of aromatic woods, spices and other botanical fragrance ingredients.

The Daily Incense collection includes a variety of traditional fragrance blends for regular use. Within this range, Nokiba is distinguished by its combination of sandalwood, earthy patchouli and balsamic benzoin resin.

International version with brown incense sticks

The international version of Nokiba – Moss Garden offered here contains 35 brown incense sticks measuring approximately 22 cm in length. They have no bamboo core and an average burning time of around 50 minutes per stick.

Nokiba is also available in a Japanese version, including a large box containing 490 shorter incense sticks. The complete formulas and blending proportions of the different versions are not documented. It is therefore not possible to reliably determine any potential differences in their composition.
