Koju 1575 by Nippon Kodo is a collection of Japanese incense sticks that brings together five distinctive fragrance compositions and the story of a Japanese master of incense. Each variety has its own character and symbolically represents a stage in his life, from childhood to wisdom.

The five fragrances Moegi, Odori, Oji, Kibo and Yama form a collection that encompasses gentle, floral and warm notes alongside precious woods and richly layered aromatic compositions.

Koju 1575 – a tribute to the Japanese incense tradition

The collection takes its name, Koju 1575, from Koju, a Japanese master of incense whose traditional knowledge, according to the manufacturer's account, has been passed down from generation to generation since 1575.

Nippon Kodo draws inspiration from this story, interpreting the different stages of the incense master's life through five individual compositions. Each fragrance carries a symbolic meaning and possesses a distinctive olfactory identity.

The five fragrances of the Koju 1575 collection

Moegi – the beginnings

Moegi (萌黄) represents childhood and the beginning of life. Its name evokes the delicate green of a young plant shoot.

The fragrance composition combines vanilla and tonka bean with fresh fig notes. A gentle sweetness meets a deeper, warmer fragrance base, while the fig contributes a touch of green freshness.

Moegi has a soft yet multifaceted character that evokes the idea of a young life beginning to unfold.

Odori – youth

Odori (踊り) means "dance" and symbolises the sensual and refined beauty of youth.

The composition opens with the gentle sweetness of honey. Floral notes then unfold, reminiscent of a dance of cherry blossoms, accompanied by a delicate hint of white musk.

Odori combines floral lightness with a warm, soft sweetness. The musk provides a gentle background without overpowering the floral notes.

Ôji – the prince

Oji (王子) means "prince" and represents the refinement of character, independence and personal style of the incense master.

This refined woody composition brings together amber notes, cedarwood and Jinkoh (agarwood). The warm, enveloping quality of amber blends with the drier character of cedarwood and the aromatic depth of agarwood.

Oji particularly appeals to lovers of complex woody fragrances who seek a connection between traditional Japanese incense and contemporary fragrance design.

Kibô – hope

Kibo (希望) means "hope". This variety evokes precious fragrance compositions that were once reserved for Japanese aristocratic families.

The fragrance combines camphorwood, sandalwood and spikenard in a powerful yet refined composition.

The aromatic freshness of camphorwood meets the warm, woody character of sandalwood. Spikenard adds a deeper, spicy and earthy nuance to the composition.

Kibo has a pronounced character while retaining the delicate balance between its different fragrance notes.

Yama – wisdom

Yama (山) means "mountain" and symbolises the fulfilment and wisdom of the incense master.

This richly layered fragrance composition brings together labdanum from rockrose, hinoki and precious agarwood.

The warm, resinous labdanum blends with the characteristic woody fragrance of Japanese hinoki cypress. Agarwood adds another dimension of aromatic depth to this combination.

Yama forms the symbolic conclusion of the Koju 1575 collection and particularly appeals to those who appreciate complex woody and resinous fragrance compositions.

Japanese incense sticks without a bamboo core

All five varieties in the Koju 1575 collection are made in Japan by Nippon Kodo and share the same format. Each pack contains 60 Japanese incense sticks without a bamboo core.

The sticks are approximately 14 cm long and have a burning time of around 25 minutes. The five varieties differ in their fragrance compositions and symbolic meanings within the collection.
