Product description
Satya Masala T. T. Loban is a now rare Indian masala incense by Shrinivas Sugandhalaya of Bangalore. It dates from the manufacturer's historic production, long before Shrinivas Sugandhalaya was divided into the separate BNG and MUM companies that exist today. The name Masala T. T. Loban was already in commercial use in 1986.
This old Satya product is no longer manufactured. The packs offered here come from old stock preserved in excellent condition and are available in quantities of 20 g or 100 g.
The fragrance of Satya Masala T. T. Loban
The fragrance is soft, warm, balsamic and resinous with a natural vanilla-like facet. It is reminiscent of traditional Indian loban, particularly the aromatic resin preparations based on Sumatra benzoin. However, the exact composition of this historic Satya incense is not documented, so it cannot be assumed that the incense mixture itself contains Sumatra benzoin or any specific proportion of natural loban.
What does Loban mean?
Loban is a term commonly used in India for aromatic substances related to benzoin, as well as for various benzoin-based incense preparations. Terms such as Sambrani and Gum Benjamin are also encountered in this context. Sumatra benzoin is also known in German as Kalkuttabenzoe and has a characteristically warm, balsamic, vanilla-like and resinous fragrance.
However, the term Loban is not always used consistently across regions or products. It should therefore not automatically be equated with olibanum or true frankincense from Boswellia species. In the case of Satya Masala T. T. Loban, it primarily refers to the characteristic fragrance of this incense.
A vintage Satya product from Bangalore
For collectors and enthusiasts of older Satya incense, Masala T. T. Loban is also of particular interest because it dates from a period when Shrinivas Sugandhalaya was still a single company. It would therefore be inaccurate to attribute this historic product to either Shrinivas Sugandhalaya (BNG) LLP or Shrinivas Sugandhalaya (MUM) LLP.
