Jojoba – a warm fragrance of roasted hazelnuts

The fragrance of this soap is reminiscent of freshly roasted hazelnuts. Warm, gently nutty and slightly toasted nuances take centre stage, giving the composition a pleasantly rounded character. A subtle, natural sweetness accompanies the fragrance without making it overly sweet or heavy.

The roasted character in particular gives this fragrance variety its distinctive identity. It recalls the aroma of hazelnuts whose fragrance has been intensified by gentle roasting. The composition feels soft, warm and subtly gourmand, without pronounced notes of pastries or confectionery.

Le Chatelard 1802 explicitly describes a fragrance reminiscent of roasted hazelnuts. However, a distinction must be made between the soap's perfume and the jojoba oil it contains: natural jojoba oil generally has only a faint scent of its own. The formula also contains an added perfume composition, whose exact fragrance ingredients are not known.

With genuine organic jojoba oil

Unlike many soaps whose names merely describe a fragrance, this variety actually contains organically grown jojoba oil (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil). It is obtained from the seeds of the jojoba shrub (Simmondsia chinensis), an evergreen plant native to the arid regions of southwestern North America.

The jojoba shrub is particularly well adapted to life in hot regions with little rainfall. It grows in areas including the Sonoran Desert, which extends across parts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Its seeds contain a distinctive lipid-rich substance that has long been valued for cosmetic applications.

Although commonly referred to as jojoba oil, chemically it consists predominantly of a liquid vegetable wax. Unlike conventional vegetable oils, which consist mainly of triglycerides, it is composed primarily of long-chain wax esters. This distinctive composition gives jojoba oil its good oxidative stability and characteristic light texture.

In cosmetics, jojoba oil is valued for its emollient properties and is frequently used in skincare products for dry skin. Le Chatelard 1802 includes it as a complementary ingredient in its extra-mild soap formula. The organic designation refers to the jojoba oil used and does not mean that the entire soap is certified as organic cosmetics.

Incidentally, the roasted hazelnut fragrance does not mean that the soap contains hazelnut oil or hazelnut extract. Jojoba and hazelnut come from botanically entirely different plants.

French soapmaking and the art of perfumery in Grasse

Le Chatelard 1802 produces its soaps in Saint-Auban-sur-l'Ouvèze, in the Drôme region of Provence. The brand combines traditional Marseille soapmaking with a diverse selection of scented soaps. Its fragrance compositions are developed in Grasse, a French town with a long history of perfume production.

The soap base consists of saponified vegetable oils and is complemented by organic jojoba oil, sweet almond oil (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil) and vegetable glycerin. Sweet almond oil is valued in skincare for its emollient properties, while glycerin is known as a moisture-binding ingredient. The manufacturer describes the combination as extra-mild, nourishing and moisturising.

Use and properties

Moisten the soap with water, work up a lather between the hands and spread the foam over damp skin. Rinse thoroughly afterwards. It is suitable for daily cleansing of the hands, body and face.

After use, leave the soap to dry on a well-draining soap dish to help the bar remain firm and last as long as possible.
