Product description
Shoyeido Daigen-Koh (大元香) is a traditional Japanese incense from Kyoto and belongs to Shoyeido's classic Daily Incense collection, also known as Nature & Tradition. The composition combines sandalwood and cinnamon with other aromatic spices to create a warm, woody and spicy incense fragrance. This is the Japanese version, featuring its distinctive, very dark greyish-purple incense sticks.
Sandalwood and cinnamon – a classic Japanese incense fragrance
The fragrance of Daigen-Koh is characterised by the combination of aromatic wood and traditional spices. Sandalwood provides a warm, soft and slightly sweet base, while cinnamon gives the composition a pronounced spicy note.
This fragrance base is complemented by other aromatic spices. The specialist retailer Japan Incense mentions borneol among the ingredients, an aromatic substance with fresh, camphor-like nuances. Shoyeido does not disclose the precise formula or blending ratios.
When burning, Daigen-Koh releases a rich, warm, woody and spicy fragrance whose combination of sandalwood and spices is reminiscent of classic Japanese incense blends. The possible hint of camphor-like freshness creates an interesting contrast with the soft, sweet warmth of sandalwood.
Daigen-Koh – Great Origin from Kyoto
The Japanese name Daigen-Koh (大元香) is rendered as Great Origin in Shoyeido's international range, loosely meaning "Great Origin". The composition belongs to the manufacturer's traditional fragrance collection, reflecting a history in Kyoto that dates back to 1705.
In Japanese incense culture, sandalwood and various spices have been combined for centuries. Such fragrance blends are used both for everyday incense burning and in various religious and cultural traditions.
Daigen-Koh preserves this classic character and is particularly suited to enthusiasts of traditional, spicy Japanese incense fragrances.
Japanese version and Great Origin for the US market
The Japanese version of Daigen-Koh offered here differs in appearance from the American version, Daigen-Koh – Great Origin. Its incense sticks have a very dark greyish-purple to almost black colour, whereas the American version contains brown sticks.
Both versions are based on a traditional fragrance composition featuring sandalwood and cinnamon. Slight differences in fragrance character are possible. However, as Shoyeido does not publish detailed information about the respective formulas, no specific differences in ingredients or their proportions can be confirmed.
