Shoyeido Hakuun – White Cloud is a classic Japanese incense composition from Shoyeido's Daily Incense collection, also known as Nature & Tradition. The blend of sandalwood, benzoin resin, cloves, borneol camphor and other spices releases a warm, woody and balsamic fragrance with spicy and fresh aromatic nuances. This Japanese version is sold individually as one roll containing 35 long incense sticks.

A balanced fragrance of woods, resins and spices

The fragrance of Hakuun combines the gentle warmth of sandalwood with the balsamic character of benzoin resin. The resinous and slightly sweet nuances provide a pleasant foundation for the spicier and fresher ingredients in the composition.

Cloves contribute a warm, aromatic spiciness, while borneol camphor, with its distinctive fresh, slightly camphor-like fragrance note, creates a contrast with the softer woody and resinous aromas. Additional spices complement the blend and contribute to its complex character.

The result is a woody, balsamic and spicy incense fragrance that brings together warm and fresh aromatic facets. The exact proportions of the individual ingredients are unknown, but it is precisely the interplay of these different aromatic qualities that defines the character of Hakuun.

Hakuun – the white cloud

The Japanese name Hakuun (白雲) means "white cloud". In the international range, the same fragrance line is offered under the spelling Haku-Un – White Cloud.

Clouds are a recurring motif in Japanese landscape painting and poetry. Particularly in depictions of mountain landscapes, they represent the changing appearances of nature. The name Hakuun draws on this poetic imagery and gives the traditional incense composition a distinctive identity.

The Japanese packaging reflects this theme: blue and golden-yellow tones, stylised clouds and traditional Japanese characters define the appearance of the series.

Japanese incense craftsmanship by Shoyeido

Shoyeido was founded in Kyoto in 1705 and is one of Japan's long-established incense manufacturers. The company is particularly known for its carefully balanced blends of aromatic woods, resins, spices and other fragrance ingredients.

Hakuun belongs to the classic Daily Incense collection, which includes a variety of traditional fragrance compositions for regular use. Within this range, Hakuun is distinguished by its combination of sandalwood, balsamic benzoin and aromatic spices.

Japanese version – one individual roll of incense sticks

This version of Shoyeido Hakuun contains 35 long Japanese incense sticks without a bamboo core. The sticks measure approximately 22 cm in length and have an average burning time of around 50 minutes.

The Japanese incense sticks have a medium grey colour with a slightly warm undertone. This visually distinguishes them from the international Haku-Un – White Cloud version, whose sticks are brown. The spelling of the product name also differs: Hakuun in Japan and Haku-Un on the international packaging.

These external differences do not provide a reliable basis for drawing conclusions about possible variations in the formulas. The documented fragrance ingredients include sandalwood, benzoin resin, cloves, borneol camphor and other spices.

Sales unit and other versions

Only 1 roll containing 35 long incense sticks is sold. The product photograph shows the original Japanese box containing a total of 10 rolls to illustrate the packaging. The complete box of 10 rolls is not included in this offer.

Hakuun is also available in the international Haku-Un – White Cloud version containing 35 long, brown incense sticks, as well as in a large original Japanese box containing 490 shorter incense sticks.
