Product description
Shoyeido Kyozakura (京桜) – Kyoto Cherry Blossoms belongs to the traditional Daily Incense collection by Shoyeido, the Japanese incense manufacturer based in Kyoto, also known as Nature & Tradition. This large original Japanese box contains 490 short incense sticks with a warm, woody, spicy and slightly balsamic fragrance. The composition combines sandalwood, cinnamon, benzoin resin, cloves and other aromatic spices.
Warm woody notes, aromatic spices and benzoin
The fragrance of Kyozakura is characterised by a balanced combination of woody, spicy and gently sweet nuances. Sandalwood provides a soft, warm foundation, while cinnamon and cloves contribute an aromatic spiciness.
Benzoin resin complements the fragrance with its characteristic balsamic, slightly resinous sweetness. Additional spices complete the blend, bringing the different fragrance facets together into a harmonious whole.
When burned, the incense releases a warm, spicy fragrance with woody and balsamic accents. The composition has a traditional character, distinguishing it from modern incense fragrances dominated by floral or fruity notes.
Although the name Kyozakura evokes cherry blossoms, this is not a particularly floral fragrance. Cherry blossoms are not listed among the documented ingredients.
Kyozakura – cherry blossoms in Kyoto
The Japanese name Kyozakura (京桜) combines Kyoto with Sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom. The English name Kyoto Cherry Blossoms evokes the distinctive atmosphere of spring in Japan's former imperial capital.
During cherry blossom season, Kyoto's gardens, temple grounds and historic pathways are transformed into a landscape of delicate white and pink blossoms. Cherry blossoms hold particular cultural significance in Japan and are traditionally associated with the beauty and fleeting nature of the moment.
The Japanese Kyozakura packaging reflects this theme with flowering cherry branches and soft shades of violet, pink and light blue. Its design combines the classic fragrance composition with imagery reminiscent of spring in Kyoto.
Japanese incense craftsmanship by Shoyeido
The history of Shoyeido dates back to 1705. The Kyoto-based company is one of Japan's long-established incense manufacturers and is known for its compositions featuring aromatic woods, spices and other fragrance ingredients.
The Daily Incense collection includes a variety of classic incense blends for regular use. Kyozakura is one of the warm, spicy compositions in this range, particularly distinguished by its combination of sandalwood, aromatic spices and balsamic fragrance notes.
490 short incense sticks in the original Japanese box
This Japanese version contains 490 incense sticks without a bamboo core. The sticks measure approximately 13.5 cm in length and have an average burning time of around 30 minutes.
Their characteristic light, slightly olive-grey colour visually distinguishes them from the brown incense sticks of the international Kyo-Zakura – Kyoto Cherry Blossoms version. However, this difference in colour does not provide reliable evidence of any possible differences in the formula.
The large box is particularly suitable for those who use Kyozakura regularly and prefer a generous supply. The shorter format allows the fragrance to be enjoyed over a relatively brief burning period.
Other versions of Kyozakura
The Japanese version of Kyozakura is also available as an individual roll containing 35 long incense sticks. These measure approximately 22 cm in length and have a burning time of around 50 minutes per stick.
There is also an international version, Kyo-Zakura – Kyoto Cherry Blossoms, featuring long, brown incense sticks. On its packaging, the product name is written with a hyphen, whereas the Japanese version uses the spelling Kyozakura.
The documented ingredients include sandalwood, cinnamon, benzoin resin, cloves and other spices. As the complete formulas and blending proportions of the different versions are not known, any possible differences in composition cannot be determined more precisely.
