This approximately 30 cm long smudging feather is coloured black and white and designed to imitate the appearance of a golden eagle feather. It is used as a tool in ritual smudging practices, particularly for distributing the smoke from sage and other aromatic plants.
With calm, fanning movements, the rising smoke can be directed and dispersed as needed. At the same time, air can be gently supplied to the embers to help revive a smudging material that is beginning to fade. In various traditional smudging practices, blowing directly onto the smouldering material is avoided. The feather makes it possible to create the necessary airflow through movement instead.
In the style of an eagle feather
The black-and-white colouring is inspired by the appearance of a golden eagle feather. It is not, however, a genuine eagle feather. Smudging feathers of this type are generally made from goose feathers that have been coloured accordingly.
