This natural-coloured smudging feather, measuring approximately 25–27 cm in length, is a traditional tool for directing and dispersing smoke during smudging and incense rituals. Gentle fanning movements can be used, for example, to guide and distribute the smoke from sage and other aromatic plants.
The feather can also be used to gently supply air to smouldering incense material and help maintain the embers. In various ritual incense traditions, practitioners avoid blowing directly onto smouldering material with the mouth. A smudging feather can instead be used to create the necessary airflow through gentle fanning movements.
Use during smudging and incense rituals
The smudging feather is moved calmly above or beside the incense material. It is suitable for distributing smoke as well as gently fanning smouldering sage leaves, smudge bundles, other aromatic plants or natural resins.
