Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon californicum), also known as the holy herb, is an aromatic plant native to southwestern North America. The dried leaves offered here come from Mexico and are loosely cut, making them easy to measure for burning on charcoal.
The Spanish name “Yerba Santa” means “Holy Herb”. The plant is closely linked to the cultural history of western North America and was already known to various Indigenous peoples before Spanish missionaries gave it the name commonly used today. Its leaves naturally have a characteristic resinous, sticky surface.
Yerba Santa was used in different ways by various Indigenous communities of North America. In addition to historical uses of the plant and its leaves, it is also mentioned in connection with incense burning and ceremonial practices.
In spiritual incense traditions, Yerba Santa is particularly associated with cleansing and protection. Depending on the tradition, the plant is also associated with courage and emotional clarity. These associations belong to cultural and spiritual traditions and should not be understood as scientifically proven effects.
The dried leaves have a distinctly herbal and somewhat bitter character. When burned as incense, the aroma changes and develops softer, balsamic and earthy notes with a natural, slightly sweet nuance. This contrast between the rather bitter plant material and its warmer fragrance when burned is one of the distinctive characteristics of Yerba Santa.
The loose Yerba Santa leaves are particularly well suited to traditional incense burning on charcoal. Place a small amount on a fully glowing incense charcoal disc and add more as needed. The plant can be used on its own or combined with other herbs, woods and incense resins.
