Sumatra Benzoin – Natural Resin from Indonesia
Sumatra benzoin is a natural incense resin from Indonesia obtained from the benzoin tree Styrax benzoin. This high-quality grade consists of resin pieces of varying sizes, some of which are made up of smaller fragments and resin powder that have naturally adhered together.
Sumatra benzoin differs noticeably in fragrance from Siam benzoin (Styrax tonkinensis) from Laos. While the latter is best known for its soft, distinctly vanilla-like character, Sumatra benzoin has a stronger and spicier fragrance with characteristic cinnamon-like nuances.
Warm, balsamic and intense with sweet-spicy notes that are distinctly reminiscent of cinnamon. When burned directly, Sumatra benzoin can develop a very strong fragrance, which makes the resin particularly well suited for incense blends.
Benzoin is one of the classic resins used for traditional cleansing incense rituals. In various incense traditions, the resin is used to atmospherically cleanse spaces and drive away negative energies. Benzoin is particularly often used in incense blends intended for cleansing, protection and the creation of a pleasant, harmonious atmosphere.
For such incense rituals, Sumatra benzoin combines particularly well with frankincense. The strong, warm spiciness of benzoin complements the clear, resinous character of frankincense. Depending on the incense tradition, additional resins, woods or plants may be added. The effects associated with these incense practices are based on traditional customs and spiritual practices.
Place a small amount on glowing incense charcoal. Sumatra benzoin can be burned on its own, but because of its intense fragrance, it is especially recommended as an ingredient in an incense blend. For a classic cleansing incense ritual, it can for example be combined with frankincense.
