Traditional Orthodox Mount Athos incense
This traditional incense is produced on Mount Athos in Greece. It is made from high-quality frankincense resin from Boswellia papyrifera from Ethiopia, processed according to traditional monastic recipes. This variety is called “Athos” and represents the classic character of Orthodox incense.
Mount Athos is an autonomous monastic republic in northern Greece and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The peninsula is home to around twenty Orthodox monasteries belonging to Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian and Russian traditions. Some of these monasteries still produce incense by hand using traditional methods, preserving centuries-old production techniques.
Orthodox incense has accompanied church services, prayers and religious ceremonies for centuries. Outside the liturgy, it is also appreciated for meditation, moments of contemplation or for naturally scenting living spaces. These uses are rooted in religious and cultural traditions.
