Traditional Orthodox incense in the Byzantine style
This incense is produced on Mount Athos in Greece according to traditional monastic craftsmanship. It is made from high-quality frankincense resin from Boswellia papyrifera from Ethiopia, processed according to traditional recipes. The “Byzantine” variety refers to the long liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church and the spiritual culture of the Byzantine Empire.
Mount Athos is an autonomous monastic republic in northern Greece and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Around twenty Orthodox monasteries belonging to Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian and Russian traditions are located on the peninsula. Some of these monasteries still produce their incense today using centuries-old methods, thereby preserving an important cultural heritage.
Frankincense has played a central role in the Orthodox liturgy for centuries, accompanying church services, prayers and religious celebrations. Today, Orthodox incense is also appreciated for meditation, quiet moments or for naturally scenting living spaces. These uses are rooted in religious and cultural traditions.
