Sanaag Frankincense – Boswellia occulta from Somaliland
This exceptional frankincense comes from the Sanaag region in northern Somaliland on the Gulf of Aden. It is obtained from Boswellia occulta, a frankincense species with a very limited natural distribution. The resin offered here consists of pure Boswellia occulta and has not been mixed with other frankincense species.
The history of this species is particularly remarkable: the trees and their resin had been known to local frankincense harvesters for generations, but Boswellia occulta was only scientifically described as a distinct species in 2019. Before then, its resin was often harvested and traded together with that of other Somali frankincense species, particularly Boswellia carteri.
Boswellia occulta grows in a small area of the Sanaag region, particularly around the Hodma Valley. There, the species occurs on dry, limestone-rich slopes and can sometimes grow alongside Boswellia frereana. This geographically limited origin makes Sanaag frankincense a particularly interesting variety for enthusiasts who wish to discover different natural Boswellia species.
The comparatively dry resin is locally known as «Fusoos». Traditionally, part of this frankincense production reached the Arabian Peninsula via Yemen. Its long history of local use therefore stands in interesting contrast to the very recent botanical description of the species.
The fragrance differs noticeably from many better-known frankincense varieties. Alongside the typical balsamic and resinous base character, Boswellia occulta displays a distinctive, herbaceous-bitter aromatic note. This unusual fragrance signature is one of the characteristic features of Sanaag frankincense and makes a direct comparison with classic Somali or Omani frankincense particularly interesting.
Like other natural frankincense resins, Sanaag frankincense is traditionally burned as incense. For centuries, frankincense has been closely associated in the cultures of the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula across the Gulf of Aden with fragrancing rooms as well as religious and ceremonial incense burning.
