Sudanese Frankincense – Boswellia papyrifera
This natural frankincense comes from Sudan and is obtained from the resin of Boswellia papyrifera. The same frankincense species also occurs in Ethiopia and Eritrea, which is why resins from these regions can be very similar in fragrance and character. The Sudanese variety is suitable both for burning on its own and particularly well as an ingredient in classic resin blends.
Compared with stronger frankincense varieties, Boswellia papyrifera generally has a somewhat lighter and less heavily resinous character. This makes the resin easy to combine with other incense materials without completely overpowering their fragrance.
Light, balsamic and pleasantly resinous with fresh, subtly spicy nuances. Compared with some Omani frankincense varieties, the fragrance is somewhat more understated and closely resembles Ethiopian or Eritrean Boswellia papyrifera.
Frankincense is one of the oldest known incense resins and has been used for centuries in numerous cultural and religious traditions. In various incense traditions, its smoke is associated with purification, contemplation and a calm, solemn atmosphere.
Sudanese frankincense is particularly well suited for blends with benzoin, myrrh or other natural resins. Its comparatively mild character allows it to form a harmonious base while balancing stronger fragrance notes. These uses are based on traditional incense practices and cultural traditions.
Place a few resin grains on glowing incense charcoal and add small amounts as needed. Alternatively, the resin can be slowly warmed on a suitable incense sieve or metal plate. It can be used on its own or as an ingredient in custom incense blends.
